Sandbar House

Chapin, South Carolina

A self-employed German engineer and his wife purchased a 2-acre lake front property to build a new home for their family of five. They wanted a house design that was modern, light filled, and playful. The design result is a 4,000 SF modern house clad in white stucco with ribbed metal and cypress wood accents. Insulated concrete formed walls are utilized on the exterior building envelope for maximum energy efficiency, while large glass openings frame views of the surrounding lake property. Solar tubes and clerestory windows provide additional daylight transmission throughout the house, contributing to an overall bright interior environment.

Both homeowners love to cook, and the floor plan is organized around a double kitchen at the heart of the house. A prep kitchen serves the primary function for food preparation while a cook top, oven, and kitchen island define a more social setting adjacent to the living and dining areas. The kitchen area opens directly onto a covered porch featuring a custom-built (by the home owner) pizza oven and outdoor dining. The house is separated into public and private areas with bedroom areas surrounding main living areas. The master suite is situated at the north end of the house and includes a private office. The south wing of the house contains the children’s areas with separate bedroom suites for each of the three daughters. A large playroom is located off of the bedroom corridor where spiral stairs lead up to a craft room overlooking the kitchen and living areas. At the front of the house, a large workshop and 2-car garage flank the front entrance with a direct connection to the interior of the house through the utility room. Enter through the front door and you are greeted with a framed view of the trees and lake beyond.
