Orangeburg, South Carolina
The Cecil Williams South Carolina Civil Rights Museum is relocating from it’s current location in Cecil Williams’ former home to the historic railroad corner redevelopment site in downtown Orangeburg, SC. Situated between two new proposed dorm buildings for Claflin University and SC State University, the 10,000 SF museum will occupy the footprint of the former State Theater and College Soda Shop. The new museum location will provide greater visibility and more space for Cecil Williams’ extensive collection of photographs and artifacts illustrating the history of the civil rights movement in South Carolina and beyond. The building design incorporates the historic Boulevard Street facade of the former State Theater and College Soda Shop and recalls original building details, including the marquee signage and canopy structures.
